Sidequests - Shumi Village Stone Credits: _heartilly_ for writing content

Basic Information

The Shumi Village Stone Quest is another quest that is linked to Laguna's past, but a part of his past that you do not know about unless you do this sidequest. The Shumi Village is also the former home of Balamb Garden Master, NORG.

The Village

The village itself is located on a northern most continent near the Chocobo Forest (Beginner's). The easiest way of getting there is to fly to Trabia Garden and then fly roughly North-West. Enter the strange building and you will see three of the inhabitants standing around a draw-point. If you talk to the middle Shumi he will allow you to draw Ultima from here for 5,000 gil. You can draw from here repeatedly, but you must pay 5,000 gil each time.

The Workshop

Whether or not you chose to draw Ultima, then proceed to the top of the screen and step into the elevator. It will take you down to the village itself. You can either explore the village now or later if you wish. If you go into the Inn (the first building after the elevator) you can hear the piano version of Eye on Me being played quietly. Walk to the far left of the settlement (past the frog) and enter the last building. Walk to the back of the workshop and talk to the Shumi there. He is currently building a statue of Laguna! The sculptor will tell you to visit the Elder. Don't miss the Firaga draw point behind the statue.

The Elder

Then leave the workshop and go the Elder's House on the previous screen, which was previously guarded by a Moomba (you should remember these guys from the D-District Prison). You can now use the save point to the left of the house, and draw Blizzaga to the right, and then enter the house. Talk to the Village Elder who will tell you to return to the sculptor. The sculptor will ask you to find five stones for him which he needs to build the statue.

The Stones

The sculptor will tell you which stone he wants you to find next and once you have found it, take it to him and he will tell you which stone he needs next. If you need help there is a minerals specialist sitting at the table to the left of the elevator who can provide you with hints. Here is where you can find the stones:

  1. Blue Stone
This stone is the easiest to find. Walk to the left of the statue of Laguna and you will see a big blue stone just behind one of your party members. Squall will say, "Huh...?", which is an indication that you have found something and he does this every time. Well done, you have found the first stone!
  2. Wind Stone
Go to the elevator screen where the minerals specialist is also seated. This stone is the blue stone that is in between the first two buildings.
  3. Life Stone
This is a pretty well-hidden stone. Go the screen with the Elder's house and examine the roots to the left of the building. When you examine the right spot, Squall will climb up and find the Life Stone hidden amongst the roots.
  4. Shadow Stone
This stone is probably the hardest to find. Ride the elevator back up to the screen with the Ultima draw point. This stone is at the bottom right of the stairs where the shadows of the roof structure (the blue lines) all intersect.
  5. Water Stone
The most obvious thing would be to take the frog's perch, as Squall even goes "Oh...". But don't, as it is not the right stone. Go to the house behind the frog (to the right of the workshop). Walk up to the kitchen sink left of the artisan and search near it. It can be difficult sometimes to get the angle right.

Reward

Once you give the Water Stone to the sculptor, you will be sent back to the Elder. He presents you with your reward - a look at his palms. As you are about to leave however, the Elder's Attendant presents you with a Phoenix Pinion.
