The Compilation

Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII Official LogoTo clear common misconceptions, Fabula Nova Crystallis is not the actual Final Fantasy game itself, but is rather the collective name of all the games released as Final Fantasy XIII. It is a compilation, similar to what Square-Enix has done to Final Fantasy VII where several titles were released such as Advent Children, Before Crisis and Dirge of Cerberus. To celebrate the 13th title in the world-renowned FINAL FANTASY series, Square Enix has undertaken a colossal project involving the development of various content for multiple platforms. (Square-Enix Press Release, May 8th 2006)

Currently there are three confirmed titles, but Square-Enix has revealed that there will be a total of six projects. The company views this compilation like Final Fantasy VII, where the series will continue to expand over the years. The three other unconfirmed titles might be released at a later date, but rest assured, they will come.

The three confirmed titles are:

Notice that the official title are Agito XIII, not XIII Agito and Versus XIII not XIII Versus.

Translation, Meaning

When translated from Latin, Fabula Nova Crystallis is defined as The New Tale of the Crystal. It is a fitting title as all the games follow a crystal theme, where a crystal myth plays a vital role in the storyline.

Though they are part of thesame compilation, the titles, however, do not coincide at all. They are set at different places with different characters. They do not overlap or share a storyline. Expect the ubiquitous Chocobos, Moogles and magic to appear though, as they have done so many times in the past. Aside from those three, the only common binding force of all three are the crystals themselves, hence the title Fabula Nova Crystallis.

Crysal Mythos

It has not been revealed what the "common crystal theme" might be, but seeing as previous titles dealt with the theme quite significantly, it can be inferred that the "myth" is the story of the governing forces of the universe. Crystals are regarded with high esteem and posses great power.

In Final Fantasy III, four elemental crystals determined the harmony and balance of the universe. In Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, the crystals bound the fantasy-world created by Mewt. When they are destroyed, Ivalice will cease to exist. Both games revolved around the myth of the crystals, and used it to advance the storyline. Fabula Nova Crystallis will probably follow the same path.
