The new kid in town, Marche Radiuju is a shy and self-conscious boy. His parents have just gotten divorced, and his brother Doned is ill. His family thought the fresh country air of St. Ivalice would be good for them all. Marche quickly befriends a timid and fragile boy named Mewt, and a headstrong girl named Ritz.

When the three friends find an ancient and mysterious book in a used bookstore, their lives are changed forever. Marche awakens one morning and finds himself in the strange and fantastic world of Ivalice. Now he must begin a quest to unravel the mysteries of this new land, and find a way back home.

Ritz Malheur is an outspoken and strong-willed girl. Her tenacity and spirit have alienated her from the other kids in school, except for her new friends Marche Radiuju and Mewt Randell. Even though she appears tough on the outside, she harbors a secret vulnerability that troubles her greatly.

When Ritz and her friends discover an ancient book in a used bookstore, everything in their world changes. Their home of St. Ivalice is no more. Ritz finds herself in a strange new world called Ivalice. In this new world, Ritz is a feared and well-respected warrior. Traveling with her new friend, Shara, Ritz sets out to find her friends Marche and Mewt, and find a way home. But her heart is torn between going back to their dreary lives, and staying in this fantastic new world.

Mewt Randell is a shy and timid boy, who is picked on and bullied at school. The teddy bear he carries everywhere with him was a gift from his mother before she passed away, and another reason for the kids at school to tease him.

Mewt's life seems empty and dreary, until one day he finds a mysterious book in an old bookstore. Suddenly, everything in St. Ivalice changes. The world at Mewt knows it disappears, replaced by a strange new world called Ivalice. In this new world, Mewt is a powerful prince, who receives whatever his heart desires.

Montblanc is a Moogle, a race of small and mischievous creatures in Ivalice. He is the first person Marche Radiuju meets in this strange new land, but he quickly becomes a trusted friend and ally to Marche. Montblanc teaches Marche all about the world of Ivalice and its many wonderful creatures, and guides him on his journey to find a way home.
