Judgement System

The Judgement System

There are two systems of order that govern the world of Ivalice: the laws that determine the rules of engagement and the judges who enforce those laws. Laws function during combat by forbidding units to take certain actions while rewarding them for others. Whenever laws have been set for an engagement, a judge will be there to observe and enforce. Though it is possible to take forbidden actions, woe betide any unit who should break the law, for they will be punished!

Laws

Access the current laws of the day while on the world map by pressing the L Button. Forbidden actions are shown on the left, while recommended actions are on the right. Check daily as the laws change often in Ivalice.

  • Forbidden Actions - These actions, eventhough are forbidden, can be done. It is not recommended, however, that you do them. Once you do a forbidden action, you will recieve either a yellow card or a red card - these cards are nothing but trouble. Click here for more information on yellow and red cards.
  • Recommended Actions - Each forbidden action has a counterpart, a recommended action. These actions, when done, will earn you 1JP. Click here for more information about JP.

Law Cards

Use law cards as a countermeasure to the laws of Ivalice. "Anti-law" cards will help during battle to nullify a current law, while normal law cards create new laws. Hit "Start" during battle to open the system commands, where you can check current laws and use law cards in open law card slots.

  • Normal Cards - These cards, marked in pink, pass new laws if used.
  • Anti-law Cards - These cards, marked in gold, nullify already existing laws.

Judge

Aside from the lawless Jagds, Judges preside over any combat in Ivalice. They are neutrally-aligned, so they will not aid any of the two opposing parties. Like units in battle, they can move around the field and perform special actions. They reward Judge Points, issue yellow and red cards, send units to prison, and sometimes move KO'd units from one tile to another.

Law Breaking

Beware of judges if you break the law! Judges issue warnings, shown as yellow cards. If your unit recieves two yellow cards during battle, he/she will be removed and will be sent to the prison.

Yellow and Red Cards

Each law in Ivalice is ranked from R1 (Rank1) to R6 (rank6). The higher the rank of the law is, the more severe your penalty will be after battle if you break a law.

  • Yellow Cards - whenever you break a low-ranked law, you will recieve a yellow card. After the battle, whichever unit recieved a yellow card will be punished. The punishments can be as quick as gil fines or as fatal as status downs.
  • Red Cards - when you have broken an ample amount of laws (mostly after 2 laws) or broken a R6 law, you will recieve a red card. Once you get this card, you will be taken out of the battle and be in prison. Beware: when Marche recieveds a red card, the game is over.

Judge Points

JP (judge points) are given by the judge to units who KO other units or do a recommened action during battle. Keep an eye on these points because you can use them to perform powerful combo attacks or summon powerful allies known as Totemas.
